Linux is an operating system that is separate from the basic that is produced for a regular PC. The novel thing about Linux is that it is free, and is developed and improved by a series of volunteer colleagues to keep the process alive. The system is used to help produce faster calculations and programming commands. The functions help to expedite speeds of the demands, and while not connected with another processor, can run the same types of programs that would be seen with Windows or Apple.

Incorporating Linux onto Your PC

Linux can be downloaded onto your PC through either the web, or with a disc purchased with a how-to manual for a small price. the installation and download is the same as any

program, but once done, will produce what is called the virtual machine. This means that there are two separate processors that will require two separate booting processes. A virtual machine is where two operating systems are using the the basic technology of the computer, but run a different set of programming and calculations separately.

The bonus for users is that there is a variety of uses for the different types of operating systems. Software runs the same on a basic processor as it would with the Linux system, making the overall processor function duly as a faster processor, and one that can handle programming that is suitable for other operating systems. The final bonus for the Linux system is that there is no additional pull on a system to run the Linux software.

Operating System Overview

Different operating systems react to commands based on what they have been programmed to do. There are many systems available, but based on popularity, few are highly acknowledged. One system that is grossly underrated is Linux. This system in particular is able to process in almost a better capacity than the other systems, but because of its free status, there is no way to have it placed on a system for purchase for consumers. This means that it is restricted to be a virtual machine.

Other Systems

There are other systems on the market like Mac, Windows, Acer, SIM, and other that are used in conjunction with Linux, if a user so chooses. Linux can use the same basic programming of a computer, but it simply works the commands differently. This means that there can be two different operating systems on one computer.

For users that are new to the computer world, this may sound confusing, but the reality is that operating systems are worth learning about. They are the heart and soul of how a computer works and operates, and understanding the components that put them together will go a long way to understanding the computer in general.

There is nothing to be afraid of when it come to learning the new systems. In fact, operating systems have become so user friendly that it is not that difficult for the learning to take place. While it may seem intimidating at first, just remember that computers are constructed to be easy to use so that you continue to purchase that particular brand.

The Old Hardware & Software Question

One question that frequently comes from those who are new to the computer world is:

“What is the difference between hardware and software?”

The quick answer is that computer hardware is all the stuff you can see and touch. It is your keyboard, monitor, mouse, motherboard, printer, etc.

Software is the stuff you can’t touch; it is applications, programs, and systems.

Software is loaded into the hardware and then both begin to function. Software is usually specific and carries out certain programs; hardware enables all software programs to work. Hardware also wears out after a certain amount of time; software does not- although it may become outdated and need upgrading.

Software is also divided into two categories:

  • Systems Software: this is the software that makes the computer systems function. This is the operating system or OS of the computer.
  • Applications Software: These are specific programs and apps that are geared for the individual likes and needs of the computer owner.

Software is the reason that your hardware works, yet software cannot work without the hardware. In the business world this is called synergy. Synergy is where the Total is greater than the Sum of its Parts.

An example would be: Mr. Hardware is worth 5 and Ms Software is also worth 5, Without each other they don’t get much done but together, there is nothing they can’t accomplish. Together they are worth 100; apart they would add up to 10.

So, remember:

  • Hardware is everything you can touch- even the CD-ROM that holds your latest software program.
  • Software cannot be touched- it is the applications and the programming.

Easy?

The problem is that if you are a regular user to PC computers or Mac computer you may be unfamiliar with how to check out how much memory you are exactly using, using the Linux operating system. That is because the Linux operating system requires you to put in a set of commands in order to bring up with how much memory you are using. Windows PC and Mac operating systems have this option set up in a graphical user interface window which allows users to click and see how much memory they are using. If you are using a Linux operating system and wish to see how much memory you are using here is a look at how to perform the command in order to bring up that type of information.

Linux: It’s Free!

When deciding on an operating system for your computer many people go with Windows or another popular one everyone has heard of. Windows is obviously one of the most common operating systems. People usually pick Windows or other popular operating systems because they have heard of them and everyone uses them. Just because these operating systems are popular, it does not necessarily make them the best.

These popular operating systems can be expensive. If you have several computers you may be required to buy a license for each separate computer.

Believe it or not there are operating systems out there completely free and Linux is one of them. Linux systems can be installed on any computer without it costing anything. Whereas, Microsoft licenses are expensive and you often have to renew your license.

Don’t let the price fool you though. Linux comes with great features aside from the cost. There is great security that comes with Linux, which is said to be stronger than Windows. This could be because Linux isn’t as popular, so it is not targeted as much.

Linux gives you freedom to choose things such as many varieties of desktop look and feel. You also get freedom of software choices when doing certain things. The software on Linux is full of features not found on Windows.

Linux is also great for old computers you hardly use. You can install Linux and use it as a backup. Plus the old computers have no problem installing Linux, where you might find it difficult to install Windows into these old computers.

Linux is great if you’re limited on money, which the majority of us are. You don’t have to hassle with keeping up licenses and paying for them. Don’t think that because it’s free it isn’t good. The price isn’t the only good thing about Linux.
