Linux is an operating system that is separate from the basic that is produced for a regular PC. The novel thing about Linux is that it is free, and is developed and improved by a series of volunteer colleagues to keep the process alive. The system is used to help produce faster calculations and programming commands. The functions help to expedite speeds of the demands, and while not connected with another processor, can run the same types of programs that would be seen with Windows or Apple.

Incorporating Linux onto Your PC

Linux can be downloaded onto your PC through either the web, or with a disc purchased with a how-to manual for a small price. the installation and download is the same as any

program, but once done, will produce what is called the virtual machine. This means that there are two separate processors that will require two separate booting processes. A virtual machine is where two operating systems are using the the basic technology of the computer, but run a different set of programming and calculations separately.

The bonus for users is that there is a variety of uses for the different types of operating systems. Software runs the same on a basic processor as it would with the Linux system, making the overall processor function duly as a faster processor, and one that can handle programming that is suitable for other operating systems. The final bonus for the Linux system is that there is no additional pull on a system to run the Linux software.

There is so many new software programs that are available, and many are free. Depending on what your need is, there is a software available online. For example, for those that have a desire to write and publish their own work, they can download a software application for Kindle and other e-book writing tools. Some of the best picture cropping tools are also available as they are free websites. Sites like Flikr, or Picnic are great ways to play with photos.

Having the Right Amount of Memory

Image via Wikipedia

The right amount of memory and space on your harddrive is key to making sure that you will have optimal running capacity on your computer when you install the program. The best part though is that most programs will be able to detect your memory space and allow you to reallocate space so that you can use your computer with the most effeciency.

The perk about memory is that many of the applications that you need to run most of the functions that you enjoy can be used directly through a website. This means that there is not storage needed on your computer. However, the bandwidth might come into question. Some websites require a certain running speed from your internet provider in order to run properly.

Take a look at your computer system to make sure it can handle all of the applications that you need and use everyday. The final step is to make sure that your registries remain clean so that you can continue to use your favorite programs.

Different operating systems react to commands based on what they have been programmed to do. There are many systems available, but based on popularity, few are highly acknowledged. One system that is grossly underrated is Linux. This system in particular is able to process in almost a better capacity than the other systems, but because of its free status, there is no way to have it placed on a system for purchase for consumers. This means that it is restricted to be a virtual machine.

Other Systems

There are other systems on the market like Mac, Windows, Acer, SIM, and other that are used in conjunction with Linux, if a user so chooses. Linux can use the same basic programming of a computer, but it simply works the commands differently. This means that there can be two different operating systems on one computer.

For users that are new to the computer world, this may sound confusing, but the reality is that operating systems are worth learning about. They are the heart and soul of how a computer works and operates, and understanding the components that put them together will go a long way to understanding the computer in general.

There is nothing to be afraid of when it come to learning the new systems. In fact, operating systems have become so user friendly that it is not that difficult for the learning to take place. While it may seem intimidating at first, just remember that computers are constructed to be easy to use so that you continue to purchase that particular brand.

One question that frequently comes from those who are new to the computer world is:

“What is the difference between hardware and software?”

The quick answer is that computer hardware is all the stuff you can see and touch. It is your keyboard, monitor, mouse, motherboard, printer, etc.

Software is the stuff you can’t touch; it is applications, programs, and systems.

Software is loaded into the hardware and then both begin to function. Software is usually specific and carries out certain programs; hardware enables all software programs to work. Hardware also wears out after a certain amount of time; software does not- although it may become outdated and need upgrading.

Software is also divided into two categories:

Systems Software: this is the software that makes the computer systems function. This is the operating system or OS of the computer.

Applications Software: These are specific programs and apps that are geared for the individual likes and needs of the computer owner.

Software is the reason that your hardware works, yet software cannot work without the hardware. In the business world this is called synergy. Synergy is where the Total is greater than the Sum of its Parts.

An example would be: Mr. Hardware is worth 5 and Ms Software is also worth 5, Without each other they don’t get much done but together, there is nothing they can’t accomplish. Together they are worth 100; apart they would add up to 10.

So, remember:

Hardware is everything you can touch- even the CD-ROM that holds your latest software program.

Software cannot be touched- it is the applications and the programming.

Easy?

In the world of technology that is small and getting smaller, how do you choose what your next computer should: a laptop or a desktop? Here are some things to think about that should help you decide.

Desktop Computers

When it comes to desktop computers, bigger is cheaper, so to speak. When you look online at the prices of desktops, you’ll notice that you can get the same power, speed, and durability for a lot less than a laptop. In fact, you can easily get a more powerful computer for less. Why? When you have to fit all the components of a computer into a small case, it costs more to produce those components. It’s that simple; so if you plan on doing all of your work from one location, desktops are the way to go by far.

Laptops

It may seem that one downside to a laptop is the monitor. For laptops, the main things to look for are portability and durability. What’s the point of having a laptop if you can’t haul it around with you everywhere? So smaller and lighter is better. But at the same time, you don’t want to have to squint every time you work on your computer. The solution to this problem is buying a monitor and station that connects your laptop to the monitor (along with an external mouse and keyboard). This way when you’re home, you can still have the large screen.

Overall, if you can afford the higher price tag of a laptop plus external monitor, it really is the best way to go.

Once you have set up your Linux operating system with the proper sets information for the remote access you’ll be able to program the computer to remotely access another computer. To do that you’ll have to put in several different settings so that the computer is prepared to remote access the other computer. Here’s a look at the steps that are involved to remote accessing a computer that runs on the Linux operating system. This walk-through will take you through how to get the IP address on the Linux operating system so that you are able to remote access the computer anywhere.

Step one. You’ll need to locate the IP address of the computer that is running the Linux operating system. The IP address is essential to remote access as allows the other computer to know exactly which computer it needs to access. Retrieving the IP address from your Linux operating system can be done in one or two ways.

Step two. If you have a Linux operating system that is directly connected to the Internet you can get the IP address by doing the following. Linux operating systems that are directly connected to the Internet can have their IP address retrieved straight from the Internet service provider. You can get this by calling or Internet service provider or by using an independent free IP address retrieval software which is available for free online.

Step three. If you have a Linux operating system that is connected through a router you can get the IP address in the following way. Open up a command window and type in the command ifconfig. This will bring up the IP address of your computer and allow you to use it to access the remote access.

One of the most commonly used e-mail clients for those that use the Linux operating system is an e-mail system known as Thunderbird. Thunderbird is an e-mail client that is produced by Mozilla and is open sourced which allows users to receive the same benefits as they would another e-mail client without having to pay the high cost. Thunderbird users are able to store e-mail messages, e-mail address books, save account passwords and other settings into their profile directory. So what happens when you wish to use your Thunderbird profile on another you Linux computer? Here’s a look at how you can transfer the Thunderbird profile from one Linux computer to another.

Step one. In the top panel of your screen there is a section titled home. Choose this and pick the option titled places. From places choose the option titled view and then show hidden files.

Step two. Locate the file titled Thunderbird and right-click on it. You can then choose the option titled copy.

Step three. Place a USB flash drive into one of the Linux computer USB slots which will allow you to transfer from one computer to another.

Step four. From the places menu choose the name of the drive that you have placed the USB flash drive in.

Step five. You can then select edit and choose paste. This will take the hidden file that you just copied and placed it into the USB drive. From there choose file and then close.

Step six. From the desktop of your Linux operating system right-click on the USB drive that you are using and selecting eject. You can then remove the USB flash drive and take it to another computer which will allow you to download it and use it with that Thunderbird on the computer.

Most people who use the Linux operating system like to go with open source programs. Open source programs allow them to use computer programs that are very similar to the ones that need to be paid for but instead are free. One of the most popular type of open-source programs that is used by Linux operating system users is known as the Thunderbird. Thunderbird is an open-source program that is used for e-mail. it is very easy to use. The hardest part about getting Thunderbird on your computer when using Linux is knowing how to download it. Here’s a look at how to download and get Thunderbird working on your computer.

Step one. You must first download the program Thunderbird from on the Mozilla website.

Step two. Once the download is complete you’ll need to open up a Linux terminal window which will allow you to put in a command.

Step three. You’ll need to type in the command cd/opt and push the enter key. You will then need to type in the prompt mkdirthunderbird and push the enter key. You’ll need to type in one last prompt which is cd thunderbird and push enter.

Step four. You’ll need to type in the command cp/home/path/to/thunderbird.dowload.tar.gz only replace the words home path and to with where you have downloaded the program. The Thunderbird download will also include the addition the name of the download program that you installed. After you have typed this all out push the enter key and installation will begin on your Linux operating system.

Step five. Once the download is complete you can start the program by typing in the command opt/thunderbird/thunderbird which will automatically start the Thunderbird program on your Linux operating system.

A Palo Alto, California company known as Box.net released a newer, better version of their cloud-hosted content management application, Enterprise, on Thursday. It also has real-time notification abilities and new alliance features.

Made available to users, the beta version of the overhauled application is partnered temporarily with the old version, so users can toggle back and forth between them. This will go on through the end of February, when the two will no longer be partnered.

The updated user interface offers vastly more space for seeing the content while users can participate in threaded discussions inside folders, rather than just within certain files.

Box.net is a One-Stop Shopping Site

Box.net offers users an Apps Marketplace, where they can choose and download any of 150 complimentary programs that are pre-integrated. Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box.net says the new app is created with simplicity in mind. No classes on how to figure out this app.

Box.net is known for making the user’s experience important to them and they recognize the need to persist along that path. This company was begun in 2005 with a goal to reach all levels of users, with competitive products on the high end (like Microsoft’s SharePoint) and at the lower end with companies like Sugarsync and Dropbox.

Box.net’s Enterprise Wants to be Like SharePoint When it Grows Up

They’re in direct competition with SharePoint for small and mid-size companies, especially in working areas of collaboration, basic and social content management services, according to research analyst Rob Koplowitz.

Although, Box.net does have a harder time trying to attract users because the apps don’t do as much as SharePoint does, like, business intelligence, application development and advanced search capabilities. Koplowitz added that companies looking for a more broad array of functionality won’t be crazy about Box.net’s new app, yet.

Paying for an operating system can be expensive. It gets quite costly to buy a single copy of Windows for each computer in your home, not to mention the cost of updating the system.

Using Windows can cost you hundreds of dollars, whereas you can get Linux for free. Because of the low price, places can sell a Linux based computer for a much lower price.

Just because Linux is free doesn’t make it any less of an operating system. In fact, Linux can do many things that Windows can’t. With Linux you can do things such as update everything with one action, update almost everything without a reboot, keep your system secure without the type of software that bugs you and takes up your time, take settings with you, and much more.

With Windows Update, you are only updating a few things. With Linux, every piece of software is automatically updated. The only thing you have to reboot to update with Linux is your kernel. With Windows, you are required to reboot for many things.

with Linux you can take your settings with you. All your settings are in one location, where Windows has your settings in several locations.

when using Linux you can customize your desktop to almost any limit. There are so many possibilities when it comes to customization. This tends to be an aspect many people like. Compared to Windows, this is a large plus, because with Windows you are basically stuck with a small choice of themes.

Linux is much more easy to understand than Windows. With Windows, everything is inside the computer and you need someone from a Windows team to fix any problem you have. With Linux you can spot the issues by looking at the system log, and you can often fix them yourself.

Although both operating systems have their good points, we can find better things about Linux. The price is not the only good thing.

Many people these days can’t afford a fun-filled trip to Las Vegas or even have a casino close to home. To help save money, but still partake in the fun activities of casino games, people turn to the Internet to fill those needs. Online casino games can be just as addicting as the ones in a casino. After all, people spend many hours sitting in front of the computer playing games.

Online casinos are huge right now and their popularity will only continue to increase as more people discover just how fun online casino games are. Most online casino games are 100 percent free to play, but there are some that could get you in a bit of some financial trouble.

Like with any kind of gambling, determining the risks of online casino games is important.

The main risk with online casino games is that you could potentially lose a lot of money. Just like you would at Vegas, online casino games can be both addicting and costly. Knowing the risks before hand can end up saving you from a hard financial burden.

Another huge risk is a very common one found when dealing with the Internet… scammers. There are many fake websites out there. Many fake websites will claim to be an online casino, but you will never win. You’ll lose more money because fake websites will cost more than a legitimate one. When dealing with online casinos, just be aware of all the fake websites out there. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

The last risk is identity theft. At a casino you can pretty much remain anonymous, but with online casino games, you’re putting your information out there. This is a huge risk that the website is a scam.

It is the Internet so it’s important to know the risks before planning online casino games.

If you have children that use the Internet, you may want to install keylogger software so that you know where they are going when they surf the Internet. By keeping an eye on what they do, you can stop potential problems before they even start.

Keylogger is a software program that you install on your computer. It records every keystroke that you or someone else makes.

Hackers and other malicious people will sometimes hide keylogger software in programs in an effort to get your personal information. They will put this software inside of a virus that is designed to infect your computer. They will then be able to get your personal information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers and bank information.

However, if you are a parent, you may find this software beneficial. It can record your child’s every keystroke, as well as give you screen shots or even the browsing history of where your child went on the Internet.

Many people also use this software to catch employees. If you own a business and want to make sure your employees aren’t goofing off when you aren’t around, install this software. It will let you know every website the employee visiting while working on company time. You can then take appropriate action in disciplining them.

This software is also good for catching a spouse or significant other if you suspect they may be cheating on you. You will be able to visit their browsing history as well as any of their chat logs with other people.

Whatever you decide to use the software for, make sure you install it correctly and only use it for serious issues. Keeping an eye on your kids is fine, but wanting to watch what your spouse does if you don’t even suspect them of cheating may be going a little too far.

If you are in the market for a new computer, there are many choices to choose from. If you don’t want to buy a used computer, then you will need to figure out what type of brand new computer you want to buy. With all the different types of computers out there, the choices can become quite overwhelming. Before you buy, take a moment to decide what you are going to be using your computer for.

If you liked your old model of computer, see what types they have out now with that same brand. They may have something that is similar to your old computer, except now it is completely updated and brand new with a new operating system and new features.

Decide what you are going to use your computer for. A person that needs a computer primarily to check their email and chat with their friends is going to need a much more basic computer than one that is going to use it completely for gaming.

Check around on the prices. You’d be surprised at businesses that will match the price if you find the same computer somewhere else cheaper.

Before buying a computer that you want like, check online for reviews of the computer and the brand name. If it is a popular brand, you should be fine, but if it is an unknown, see how many positive reviews they have compared to negative ones. Just because a product is cheaper up front, you may end up paying more in the end because of constant repairs and computer issues.

By deciding what you want to use your computer for, you will be able to make an accurate decision and buy one that suits your needs exactly. Make sure you take it to a professional or repair shop if it needs work done on it instead of trying to do it yourself.

If you are in the market for a new computer and have only ever had a desktop, you may want to consider buying a laptop. Laptops and netbooks are highly popular because so many people are on the go these days with their computers. While a desktop may be something you are comfortable using, you might want to give a laptop a chance before you buy another desktop.

In reality, a desktop cannot be transported every where you go. Technically it could, but that would be very difficult to do. Laptops are easy to handle and able to be taken anywhere, even if you don’t have much space to fit one.

Laptops were created so that people could have constant access to their files and also to their colleagues through chat and email programs. People that travel frequently benefit greatly from laptops, as do students.

A student can use a laptop to take notes in class, instead of having to hand write everything down. A student can also go home for the holidays and take their work home with them so that they don’t fall behind while being on vacation. A student can even take their computer to the school library so they can focus on their school projects and not have to transport their books an information back and forth.

Internet access on laptops makes them especially valuable, because now these same people can send and receive documents from wherever they are. If a business executive gets a phone call that they need to send documents as soon as possible, they can just stop in to a wireless accessible area with their laptop and send the required paperwork requested.

Laptops are great for people on the go, and also for students and business people that are on their computers all the time.

It is a question without answer, a paradox without end: you stare at the lines of code, watching them blur without reason. They are impossibilities – unable to be changed or even understood. An application has been shifted from its original intent and, while you once thought it to be a brilliant idea, you now begin to think it was never meant for the likes of you (those without year after year of experience, the casual inventor). You are confused; you are overwhelmed; you are seeking support.

But there is no company to call. There is no factory to contact. The manufacturer has no knowledge of this open source software. It has been passed through too many eager hands, shifted again and again. And you are left believing there is nothing for you to do.

You are wrong.

Finding the proper support with open source applications is possible. It merely requires more than the typical avenues. You must ignore the long pauses of customer service and the automated responses. They will offer no relief. Their words will explain only the program’s first purpose. They won’t understand what has been done to it and they will not pretend to. Their responsibility is only to their software, not to what it has become.

And so you must instead seek out forums dedicated to open sources. Look to others with more knowledge (specifically of the program you have downloaded) to offer the needed answers. The result may not be instantaneous but it will still be given in terms you can comprehend.

Should those terms take too long to be provided, though, you may instead seek out a freelance designer; who can then offer quick service and certainty. These individuals do require payment, however, and may cost more than your budget can allow. Choose wisely.

Open source software is an undeniable reward. It can also, however, be an undeniable frustration. Ignore the company responses and search for those like yourself – individuals who wish to create better applications and better online experiences.

When on the prowl for a website hosting provider, one of the primary decisions that you must make is regarding the operating system that you will run your website on. There are several different operating systems to consider, including but not limited to, Linux and Windows.

The Linux operating system is a popular option because it is cost-effective to start up and quick to get running. Windows is another popular operating system because it offers a great deal of support for users. These tend to be two of the more common choices because they are readily available and both offer a number of advantages. Another option that you can select is the Unix operating system which is similar to Linux. Macintosh operating systems also tend to be available, but are much rarer.

One of the biggest differences between Linux and Windows for web and e-mail hosting is how the server is accessed. You can use FTP access to reach your files both for Linux and Windows, but Linux is typically the only operating system that allows for SSH and TELNET access. You can typically set up TELNET access using Windows, but it is rare for a hosting administrator to offer it. FTP allows you to transfer files to your web server from your hard drive. SSH and TELNET on the other hand allow you to open a window directly to your web server so that you can manipulate files at will.

Linux and Windows servers both serve JavaScript and HTML pages. Windows servers typically create .htm files while Linux servers create .html files, though there is not much difference between these two file types aside from personal preference. Windows servers are generally ideal for FrontPage extension use, though some Linux servers do also offer this particular service. Ultimately, the choice between operating systems is up to personal preference.

Simply stated, a computer is anything that receives input then provides some type of output in a useful format. With this broad of a definition, mechanical computer examples have existed since the man first began recording his history. The first computers that were powered by electricity were developed around the 1940 to 1945 time span.

They were gigantic (the size of a large room) compared to what we know today. In fact, they consumed as much power as hundreds of current personal computers.

Modern computers run with integrated circuits. Integrated circuits are electronic circuits manufactured into a semiconductor like silicon. Especially as they have gotten smaller, they have revolutionized all of the electronic equipment used in the world today.

The circuits execute the computer’s instructions. The instructions are called a computer program. A computer program is a series of instructions written in source code (or a programming language) developed to perform a computer task. The tasks are executed from a central processor in the computer.

Source code is a gathering of statements written in a human-readable computer programming language. The source code is held in text files and stored in databases. The result is a collection of files that are necessary to convert the code from human-readable to a designated type of computer-executable form.

In the past, computer programs were manually input into the central processor using switches, paper tape or punched cards. After being loaded, the starting address was set and the execute button was pressed to begin processing.

In current situations, the computer programs are embedded right into the hardware. To begin working, primary computer programs stored in read-only memory need to boot-up. When your computer is booting, it is identifying and initializing all facets of the computer system including memory, controllers and CPU registers.

After that, the operating system is loaded and the computer starts its normal operations.

Whether you’re getting a computer for the first time, or you’re getting one as an upgrade for your existing machine, new electronics are generally exciting. You get to choose the hardware and software that you like the best, and there are all kinds of options to pick from, budget permitting. If you’re going to be using the Internet a lot to interact with others, don’t forget to check into e-mail hosting. You may even want to have a blog or Website just to get your thoughts and ideas out there to the world – or maybe you’ll start up a business and sell something online.

No matter what you’re going to be doing online, be sure that the computer you’re getting is the right one for you. If you don’t pay close attention to the hardware and software configuration that you’re getting, you might find that the computer really isn’t adequate for your needs. That can be very unfortunate, and can stop you from fully enjoying your new electronics. Before you buy, have a good idea of the kinds of things that you like to do. Talk to the salesperson and make sure that the computer will meet your needs.

If you’re not sure if the computer you’re looking at is right for you, don’t hesitate to re-consider and get a second opinion. You might want to bring a knowledgeable friend or family member to look at the computer. You can also go to a different store and see what it has to offer. Both are great ways to take your time and be sure that you’re buying the right computer at the right price – and one that you’ll be able to get a lot of use out of for a long period of time. It’s a big purchase, so make it wisely.

Built on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and packaged with a spectrum of proprietary software Ubuntu has become one of the most popular open source software systems around the world. Although designed for its user-friendliness, the cool features of the Ubuntu operating system may not be so obvious to some, especially new users. So, how can you better use it? Following are some neat tips that should have you running Ubuntu like a computing virtuoso.

1. Use GDebi for Package Installation
This GUI application allows you the ability to quickly install all your packages that you’ve downloaded manually. By using repositories, it can resolve dependencies without the hassle.

2. Change Command Techniques
There is more you can do with the change command (cd) than you thought. Quickly returning back to your home directory can be done by simply typing cd. And getting back to the previous directory before making a switch only takes the typing of cd – on your keyboard.

3. Swiftly End Processes With PKILL
Instead of applying multiple commands just to only end a process, use only the pkill command. By typing a process name after it, say Firefox for example, it will scour all processes for the corresponding name and immediately kill it.

4. Get Acclimated With Gnome Control Center
For those that are more comfortable using Windows, it is highly recommended to apply the gnome-control-center feature to configure Ubuntu like the standard control panel. It will certainly help you get acclimated much faster.

5. Clean Out Disk Space With Easy Commands
If are running low on disk space, there are a couple commands that can clear up to a gigabyte of valuable space. In a terminal window type: sudo apt-get autoremove. This deletes your redundant dependencies. Now try: sudo apt-get clean. The second command will discard unwanted cached package files.

6. Solve The Riddle of File Extensions Gone Missing
On occasion, you may run into the problem of files without their extensions labeled. This can leave you wondering what type of file it even is. Don’t worry, it isn’t your fault and there is a basic solution. Just use the file command by typing file with the file name afterwards.

The same technology used to create the popular open source Web browser Firefox has also given birth to some great software. From making films to organizing your desktop, the cool desktop programs available are diverse and can be found for a lot of uses. These ten applications are built off the Mozilla platform, and like Firefox, are free and easily downloaded.

KompoZer
As a website editor KompoZer stands out for a couple of unique reasons. For one, it is very supportive of CSS unlike other applications. And it rocks a FTP tool for uploading pages right on to your server.

Kylo
Sure Kylo is a Web browser, but what makes it so cool is that it’s built for your TV! The entire interface–from menus to fonts–was developed to be seen on the on the big screen, at least as compared to your monitor.

Miro
The Miro media player is geared towards HD video and supports all kinds of file formats. It also operates as a sharing device for your own homemade content.

Songbird
For those looking for a substitute of iTunes will find the Songbird media player appropriate. It has the look and many of the same features.

Spicebird
Combining the convenience of a calendar and instant messaging, Spicebird is an email application that also uses various widgets to work as a digital planner and communication system.

Telekast
If you have been looking for a way to make your computer video presentations easier, Telekast acts as your very own teleprompter.
